BUICK TERRAZA BOASTS MORE POWER, SAFETY AND ENTERTAINMENT FEATURES FOR 2006
Terraza, the newest addition to Buick’s growing truck portfolio, is available with even more power, added safety systems and new entertainment features for 2006, making this premium crossover sport van one of the most comprehensively equipped seven-passenger vehicles in the entire segment.
As with all Buick models for 2006, Terraza now is covered by a four-year / 50,000-mile warranty as standard, providing owners with the same level of assurance, care and confidence as many other premium automotive brands.
GM’s new 3900 3.9L V-6, which features variable valve timing and variable intake technology to deliver 240 horsepower (179 kw) and 240 lb.ft. (332 Nm) of torque,* is now offered on front-drive models of the well-equipped Terraza CX or elegantly appointed Terraza CXL mid-vans. The 3500 3.5L V-6, rated at 196 horsepower (146 kw) for front-drive
and all-wheel drive models,
continues as the standard engine on CX and CXL models, including those equipped with GM’s exclusive Versatrak on-demand all-wheel drive system. Both engines are coupled to GM’s proven Hydra-Matic 4T65-E electronically controlled automatic overdrive transaxle.
New side-impact air bag system
Other notable new features for 2006 include the availability of a side-impact air bag system for first- and second-row outboard occupants, in addition to the standard dual-stage front driver and passenger air bags. The side-impact air bags are standard on Terraza CXL, and available on Terraza CX models.
With its ability to carry seven people in quiet comfort along with plenty of cargo, Terraza combines SUV styling and all-weather driving capability with the flexibility required by mid-van customers. Just as Rendezvous and Rainier have done in their respective segments, Terraza provides the Buick attributes of comfort, style, a silent ride and ample power.
Front-wheel drive is standard, while GM’s exclusive Versatrak on-demand all-wheel drive system is available on both CX and CXL models to give Terraza even more capability. Front-wheel drive Terraza models include standard StabiliTrak, GM’s advanced electronic stability control system that helps drivers maintain control during sudden maneuvers or low traction conditions. Traction control also is standard on FWD models.
Other standard features include a four-wheel anti-lock disc brake system, 17-inch wheels and tires, independent front and rear suspension and a 121-inch (308-cm) wheelbase, giving Terraza a smooth, car-like ride with excellent handling characteristics.
QuietTuned for silent ride, comfort
Like all other Buick models, Terraza benefits from QuietTuning, a comprehensive engineering program throughout the entire vehicle to ensure a silent ride. This includes new engine isolation measures and acoustic treatments within the body structure to give this new crossover sport van one of the quietest interiors in the segment, matching its rich appearance and attention to detail.
Elegant yet functional on the inside
Comfort and elegance meet versatility and convenience within Terraza’s sumptuous interior. Chrome and wood trim accents lend a premium appearance throughout, complementing the precision fit and flowing design of the instrument panel, center console and door panels. Terraza CX has cloth inserts and leather-appointed seats in the first two rows, while the CXL has leather-appointed seats in the first two rows.
Seven-passenger seating is standard, with individual captain’s chairs in both the first- and second-row positions. The second- and third-row seats are both foldable and the third-row seats are removable, giving Terraza a high level of versatility between passenger and cargo space. In addition, an innovative rear cargo and convenience area provides an almost unlimited range of options to secure grocery bags, packages or longer objects.
Other interior features include a front overhead console and standard overhead rail system with snap-in accessory and storage modules. The rail system neatly integrates the overhead lighting system, and accommodates the standard rear HVAC, audio controls, and rear-seat entertainment system/DVD into a single unit. The available snap-in storage models have wide, flip-open doors, enabling passengers to store loose items such as CDs, DVDs, sunglasses or cell phones.
For physically challenged customers, Terraza is available with a Sit-N-Lift power seat system that provides convenient access to the right-hand second-row seating area. Operated via remote control, the power bucket seat rotates and then extends out of the vehicle before lowering for easy entry and exit.
Total safety and security approach
Terraza is engineered to be among the safest vehicles in the mid-van segment, providing outstanding performance in real-world crashes. Notable features include structural enhancements to its frame using high-strength steel. Terraza’s front-end compartment incorporates a large crush zone to preserve interior space, while the engine compartment side frame rails are designed to absorb energy in the event of a frontal impact.
In recently released impact ratings by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), GM’s new generation of crossover sport vans received a maximum five-star rating for both the driver and front passenger in a frontal impact, as well as for the side impact into the rear seat. The vehicles received a four-star rating for side impact tests of the front seat without the optional side-impact air bags.
In addition to the available side-impact air bags, Terraza has standard dual-stage driver and front-passenger frontal air bags to provide supplemental protection for front seat passengers. Terraza also is equipped with LATCH (Lower Anchors and top Tethers for CHildren) system anchors for child safety seats in all second-row seats
As with all Buick models for 2006, Terraza comes standard with GM’s OnStar Safe & Sound package using OnStar’s dual-mode (analog-digital) equipment. OnStar’s digital equipment also includes enhanced hands-free voice recognition capabilities including more intuitive continuous digit dialing and improved voice recognition accuracy. OnStar is the leading provider of in-vehicle safety, security and information services in the United States and Canada . Using the GPS satellite network and wireless technology, OnStar features core safety services and OnStar Hands-Free Calling that allows drivers to make and receive voice-activated phone calls using an externally mounted antenna for greater reception.
The OnStar service standard on the 2006 Terraza includes the General Motors Advanced Automatic Crash Notification (AACN) system, making crash data available to participating 911 centers to help them dispatch the appropriate life-saving personnel and equipment to crash scenes faster.
Endless entertainment options
Terraza is offered with a wide choice of passenger entertainment features, which can be a welcome addition on long trips while giving owners the ability to interface between the vehicle and one’s home computer or audio/video systems.
The vehicle comes with a rear-seat DVD player with flip-down screen and integrated controls. The DVD unit also provides auxiliary video and audio inputs for video games and camcorders, enabling an “instant replay” of a child’s baseball game, for example.
XM Satellite Radio also is available. XM (continental U.S. only) provides more than 120 coast-to-coast, digital-quality channels of original commercial-free music and premier news, sports and talk as well as advanced traffic and weather information for select major metropolitan areas nationwide. Consumers can subscribe to the basic service for $12.99 a month. In addition, GM customers with GMAC financing can choose to include the XM subscription in their car payments.
A standard “tri-mode” entertainment system lets occupants listen to as many as three separate entertainment sources simultaneously – DVD, CD and radio – through the speakers and dual-channel wireless headphones.
PhatNoise a segment first
Also available is the first-in-segment Mobile Digital Media Powered by PhatNoise system. PhatNoise is a wallet-sized, 40-gigabyte hard drive that installs in the Terraza’s overhead rail system. The system’s capabilities include:
- Storing and playing back up to 10,000 songs in MP3, WMA or WAV formats
- Storing and playing up to 40 movies in MPEG format (standard format for movies)
- Storing and playing a combination of songs and movies
- The ability to provide the software for playing classic video games
- A voice-browsing interface – if the driver wants to listen to music, the system tells him or her over the radio speakers the song’s name, allowing the driver to run through a list of stored music using steering wheel buttons
- Listening to books, magazine or newspaper articles recorded on a PC
- Allowing simultaneous listening to two entertainment sources
- Transferring digital camera pictures through a USB port in the PhatNoise cartridge and playing them back on the DVD screen.
The PhatNoise system’s hard drive cartridge is easily removable, so it can be connected to a home PC or laptop to download computer files for playback in the Terraza, giving passengers an unprecedented level of entertainment customization.

This procedure (J2723) ensures fair, accurate ratings for horsepower and torque by allowing manufacturers to certify their engines through third-party witness testing.
